BABETTE & CHRIS CUT THE CAKE!

The fall season got off to a rockin' start on Sunday evening, September 7. Marti & I were invited to a wedding party at New Morning for our friends Chris & Babette.

Chris Dailey McCraven is a wonderful drummer with whom we've been friends for years. Here he is playing at the party with longtime bandmates Gilles Fegeant (guitar) & Gulliver Allwood (sax). Marti & I know all these guys. It was great to listen to & hang with them last night.

A fun surprise: jazz great David Murray sat in with the house band on The Rolling Stones' "Miss You." That's David in the black teeshirt, next to big David Johnson.

JuJu Child's funkified blues got the crowd up on their feet.

Chris' stepdad, Steve McCraven (a veteran Archie Shepp sideman) sat in on drums. We had schmoozed earlier in the evening about the late 1970s in Amherst, Mass. At the end of the evening, with Steve's fierce beats underpinning the ensemble, our friend Mar Todani hit a single soaring guitar solo that brought the house down.

Now that was a wedding party!
